If the fundamental concepts involved in computer systems can be identified and then tracked through their transformations over time, not only can a useful history of computer systems be constructed, but the foundations of computer science itself and its teaching would benefit. This method has been proposed for science in general by Jerome S. Bruner and in the teaching of computer science by A. Schwill. The author puts forward a list of fundamental concepts and relates them to those propounded by V. M. Glushkov's school. A brief chronological listing of the ideas is also given along with the names of key people associated with them. The conclusion is made that researchers do not often contribute fundamental ideas so much as interpret given ones in a new cognitive situation.
