Smooth symmetrization of first-order hyperbolic systems is studied. Non-degenerate characteristics of any order are defined. The main result is as follows: Let the reference characteristic be non-degenerate, then the system is smoothly symmetrizable near the characteristic. Applying this result, the author shows that non-degenerate characteristics of any order are also stable under hyperbolic equations.
