The paper deals with the implementation of a class of nonlinear digital filters -- the stack filters. A reminder of the definitions of cascaded stack and weighted order statistic filters is given. The possible methods of their realizations are discussed. A new method for the realization of the iterated 3-point median filter, with linear complexity with respect to the number of iterations, is suggested. Also, efficient nonrecursive implementations of the recursive 3-point median filter with linear complexity with respect to the number of iterations are given. The use of dynamic domino logic for VLSI hardware implementation of positive Boolean functions, and pipelined stack filter architecture are described. The paper will be of interest for the specialists and engineers, working on digital filter design and their VLSI implementations.
