It is discussed how the results of preceding papers of I. L. Coolidge (1921), W. Blaschke and H. Terheggen (1939) and the subsequent papers of Wu-Yi Hsiang (1989), U. Brehm (1990), Th. Hangan (1992), E. Leuzinger (1992), and also the papers of the author and his students are connected with a paper of \textit{P. A. Shirokov} [On a type of symmetric spaces, Mat. Sb. 41, No. 3, 361-372 (1957)].
