The authors show that Sylow 2-subgroups of the sporadic simple groups do not possess odd order automorphisms besides the Sylow 2-subgroups of \(J_2\), \(J_3\), \(Suz\) and \(HN\) which all possess an automorphism of order 3 (realized inside of the corresponding sporadic group) and the Sylow 2-subgroup of \(J_1\) whose automorphism group is isomorphic to \(L_3(2)\). These results are used by the authors elsewhere for classifying certain amalgams involving sporadic groups.
