The paper is devoted to a complete description of the equilibrium configurations and associated stabilities of the strut, at values of relative support stiffness for which compound bifurcation occurs. The tool adopted for this investigations is a total potential energy function which involves large lateral deflection curvature, in conjunction with a two-mode Rayleigh-Ritz technique.
