An actual problem is solved: provide a systolic array implementation of 3-dimensional (3-D) digital filters in the class of infinite impulse response (IIR) ones. It is known that a 3-D IIR filter is described in a 6-D space \((n_1, n_2, n_3\), the indices of spatial variables and \(k_1, k_2, k_3\), the indices of the filter coefficients). The key to the given solution includes two stages: to project a 6-D vector onto the 3-D space and to represent the intermediate system by a systolic system composed of 2-D IIR filters and interconnecting buffers. The proposed solution provides the advantages of being regular, modular, and amenable to VLSI implementation. We think the paper represents a valuable contribution to the design of 3-D IIR filters.
