A variational formulation of a system of phase-field equations (which are regarded as a limiting case of the Penrose-Fife model for diffusive phase transitions) is introduced. One obtains a relaxed Stefan-type problem. Existence (and uniqueness for some special boundary conditions) of a weak solution is proved.
