This work presents the modifications necessary to make the two-dimensional fast multipole method useful for evaluating the fields produced by continuously distributed, rather than point, charges and dipoles. The resulting method: -- may also be used to compute Cauchy-form integrals, -- has the expected rates of convergence, -- is well suited to certain problems, which the usual method is ill-suited.
