The authors point out that the proof of a theorem of \textit{B. K. Sharma} and \textit{N. K. Sahu} [Math. Stud. 59, 77-80 (1991; Zbl 0776.54038)] is incorrect. They generalize this result establishing a common fixed point theorem for two pairs of compatible maps.
