The author considers approximation orders in \(L_p(\mathbb{R}^d)\), with \(1<p<\infty\), for principal shift-invariant subspaces related to non-stationary refinements. After some general results, the author then focusses on principal shift-invariant spaces of exponential box splines generated by rational matrices, for which he establishes the exact approximation order whenever a certain regularity condition holds.
