Motivated by Mahler's functional equation \(G(z^2)= G^2 (z)+ \lambda\) the author studies the nonconstant rational solutions of \[ F(z^2)= AF(z)+ B+ C/ F(z), \] where \(A\), \(B\) and \(C\) are given constants and \(F\) is the unknown rational function to be found. The main theorem gives a way to construct all possible solutions.
