The author looks at a number of important examples of subshifts of finite type (SOFT) in two or more dimensions and analyses them to decide whether they have a unique measure of maximal entropy or not. For certain examples, it is shown that the uniqueness depends on whether a certain parameter of the SOFT is above or below a critical value. The connections of this sort of results to statistical mechanics are also investigated.
