We first prove a convergence result on the Kachanov method for solving general nonlinear variational inequalities of the second kind and then apply the Kachanov method to a nonlinear variational inequality of the second kind arising in elastoplasticity. In each step of the Kachanov iteration, one has a (linear) variational inequality of the second kind, which can be solved by using a regularization technique. An a posteriori error estimate is derived for the combined effect of the Kachanov iterations and the regularization.
