The authors study cotilting modules ``in the noetherian case'' which had been previously investigated by \textit{R. R. Colby} [Commun. Algebra 17, No. 7, 1709-1722 (1989; Zbl 0677.16026)]. Following similar work of \textit{R. Colpi} for tilting modules and \(*\)-modules [ibid. 21, No. 4, 1095-1102 (1993; Zbl 0795.16004)], they dualize the latter concept and characterize cotilting modules with the help of co-\(*\)-modules.
