The authors announce some results concerning the behaviour of the zeta functional determinant of certain conformally covariant elliptic boundary problems in dimension 3 and 4 under conformal variations of the metric. They derive geometric formulas for the quotient of the zeta functional determinants and prove some special existence and uniqueness properties of extremal metrics inside a conformal class.
