The paper deals with an old formula, from 1892, giving the dimension of the space of all classical semi-invariants of given height and given degrees, describing first its proof in modern language. Then it is shown how to make the proof characteristic-free using techniques which were not available at the time of its appearance. The formula is interpreted in the language of representation theory.
