[The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually.] The papers of the book provide the basis needed for structure characterization in free turbulent flows. The topics covered are: identification and basic concepts of coherent structures, multiple decomposition, experimental requirements and limitations, signal processing. The major identification techniques (eduction schemes, proper orthogonal decomposition, stochastic estimation, pattern recognition analysis, wavelet transform based techniques) are given in details. The paper by \textit{J. P. Bonnet} and \textit{J. Delville} gives the notions of coherent structures and their detection in turbulent flows. The authors present two techniques for structure detection: the variable integration time average method and the pattern recognition approach. The paper by \textit{W. Schoppa} and \textit{F. Hussain} provides a survey of coherent structure eduction in free and wall-bounded shear flows. The next paper by \textit{R. J. Adrian} describes the application of stochastic estimation to problems of educing structural information from empirical turbulence data obtained experimentally or by numerical simulation. Topological classification and identification of small scale turbulence structures are presented in the paper by \textit{J. C. Vassilicos}. The paper by \textit{N. Aubry} et al. deals with the low-dimensional models, wavelet transform and control. Finally, the paper of \textit{O. Métais} describes direct and large-eddy simulations of coherent vortices in three-dimensional turbulence. In conclusion it should be noted that the book contains not only the new results in the area of eddy structure identification, but also includes many classical results. By this reason it will be very useful for specialists as well as for beginners.
