This paper reviews various aspects of stiffness and attempts to give a clear definition of this concept. It is shown by a number of examples and analysis that classical results derived without taking stiffness into account can be relevant for certain nonlinear stiff problems but inappropriate for others. The paper concludes by presenting various open questions relating to stiffness.
