The paper presents a new approach to the construction of cohomology theories of small categories. It gives a method for the construction of a cohomology theory of diagrams of algebras using the pairing of categorical fibrations. This is linked to the generalized Baues cohomology of small categories with coefficients in a natural system [\textit{H.-J. Baues}, \textit{G. Wirsching}, ``Cohomology of small categories'', J. Pure Appl. Algebra 38, 187-211 (1985; Zbl 0587.18006)].
