The article deals with a very interesting phenomenon in string theory: target space duality (a comprehensive list of references can be found in [\textit{A. Giveon, M. Porrati} and \textit{E. Rabinovici}, Phys. Rep. 244, No. 2-3, 77-202 (1994)]. The aim of the paper is to discuss classical aspects of this phenomenon in terms of the associated string Hamiltonian systems in the situation when the target space is a simple compact Lie group.
