Let \(k\) be a finite field or an algebraic number field and \(L\) a finite dimensional Lie algebra over \(k\). The main result of the paper is a deterministic polynomial time algorithm for computing Cartan subalgebras of \(L\) in the following two cases: 1) \(|k|>\dim_k(L)\), and 2) \(k\) is a finite field and \(L\) is a restricted Lie algebra.
