The automorphism group of a compact generalized quadrangle has finite dimension (Q1924608)

The paper presents a proof for the following result: The automorphism group of a compact generalized quadrangle where point space and line space have finite topological dimension is also finite dimensional. The arguments involved relay on structure theorems for locally compact groups. The more geometric aspects are investigated in a paper by the same authors [Result. Math. 29, No. 3-4, 376-385 (1996; Zbl 0857.51005)]. There substructures generated by a group acting on a compact generalized quadrangle are considered.
