Two-dimensional splines with hanging nodes belong to the currently most interesting objects used in approximation theory and applications. In this paper, the questions that are related to such two-dimensional polynomial splines are addressed, that is, the question of the dimensionality of the spline space, the obtainable approximation orders, suitable basis functions for the associated spline space and their supports and stability.
