The authors investigate a Lotka-Volterra competition system for two populations in a one-dimensional habitat and with free boundary. By using the comparison principle, the asymptotic behavior of the solution is investigated. Sufficient conditions for spreading success and spreading failure are given. For the spreading successful case, ``an estimate to show that the spreading speed (if exists) cannot be faster than the minimal speed of traveling wavefront solutions for the competition model on the whole real line without a free boundary''.
