The authors consider a one-dimensional model of groundwater flow in a porous stratum with cracks. The governing equations consist of two diffusion equations for the groundwater level in the porous bulk and the system of cracks, coupled by a fluid exchange term. The model involves a number of small parameters. The central objective of the paper is to make the numerical observation of increased penetration depth in the presence of cracks mathematically precise in terms of the small parameters and their relative sizes. Estimates on the penetration depth are obtained.
