This paper is concerned with the numerical solution of nonstationary nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations by finite difference approximations. An implicit-explicit (IMEX) method is developed and analyzed. Explicit conditions are given for the convergence. The method is applied to the solution of a model problem for determining the overpotential in a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell.
