Summary: We explore the average and median time lag of references during the last two centuries for mathematical publications based on data from the zbMATH database and the EuDML digital library. It turns out that they are well beyond 10 years for the whole period with the gap still growing in modern times. The only significant fluctuations are correlated with the World Wars.
