The author studies the conjugacy problem for the pseudo-Anosov automorphisms of a compact surface. He assigns to each pseudo-Anosov automorphism an AF C*-algebra in a functorial way: this allows him to obtain new invariants of the conjugacy of the pseudo-Anosov automorphism from the known invariants of stable isomorphisms of AF C*-algebras. Some open problems and conjectures are formulated.
