The author determines the canonical classes of non-minimal Lefschetz fibrations and answers a question by Endo on the diffeomorphism type of some symplectic 4-manifolds. He also proves some finiteness properties for the geography of non-minimal hyperelliptic Lefschetz fibrations of genus \(g \geq 3\) or nonhyperelliptic with \(g=3\).
