    This paper is occasioned by the award of the second Michael Brin prize in Dynamical Systems to Dmitry Dolgopyat. The author presents some of the results and techniques due to Dolgopyat. The presentation avoids technicalities as much as possible while trying to focus on the basic ideas. The author also tries to present Dolgopyat's work in the context of a research program aimed at enlightening the relations between dynamical systems and nonequilibrium statistical mechanics.
