By approximation techniques, the Conley index is extended to the case of continuous vector fields on finite-dimensional smooth manifolds. The extended index preserves all main properties of the index defined for (semi)-flows. In particular, it enables to define the concept of a (co)homology index braid class for continuous vector-fields. Using that concept, a singular perturbation result in the absence of uniqueness is proved.
