The authors consider stick-slip vibrations of an elastic disc. The investigation is motivated by the fact that there exists a whole class of mechanical systems with discs rotating relative to stationary parts, such as car brake discs, clutches, saws, computer discs and so on. The rotation of discs relative to stationary part generates the dry-friction-induced instability due to non-smooth stick-slip motion of the slider over the disk surface. Such system may be represented as automotive disc brake, where the resilience and dissipation of the pad material and pad support structure are modelled by in-plane and transverse springs and dampers. The transverse motion of the disc is discribed in modal coordinates and is coupled with the motion of slider in transverse and in-plane directions. With sufficient accuracy, the whole system can be reduced to six degres of freedom. The authors study conditions for the generation of non-stable regimes of motion.
