The authors present theoretical and numerical analyses of the initiation of adiabatic explosions by accelerated curved shocks in homogeneous explosives. Special attention is paid to critical conditions for the initiation with the shock taken as data surface, and to the expansion of the solution along material paths during the explosion. The approach is applied to two classical problems of gas dynamics of reactive systems: the impacts of constant or variable speed pistons. The understanding of these model problems can be useful for the future analyses of more complicated configurations.
