Features of S programming environment (Version 3, 1988-1993) are described. Recent development in S is discussed with particular emphasis on topics not covered, or not in detail, in the two books \textit{R. A. Becker, J. M. Chambers} and \textit{A. R. Wilks} [The New S Language, Wadsworth \& Brooks/Cole Science Series. Pacific Grove, California (1988; Zbl 0642.68003)] and \textit{J. M. Chambers} and \textit{T. J. Hastie} [Statistical Models in S. A progamming environment for data analysis and Graphics. Wadsworth \& Brooks/Cole Science Series. Pacific Grove, California (1992; Zbl 0776.62007)]. The developed version of S contains some mechanisms of the object-oriented programming (class/method mechanism), unified data and structural models frames. Statistical treatment of the models (fitting, diagnostics, etc.) is developed with use of the class/method mechanism. Data management is based on unified database classes. External objects inclusion and software testing possibilities are discussed in the paper.
