A very short proof of the classification of finite-dimensional real simple Lie algebras was given by \textit{A. W. Knapp} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 124, 3257-3259 (1996; Zbl 0865.17002)], who used Vogan diagrams, which are Dynkin diagrams with an overlay of certain additional information. The paper under review develops a corresponding theory of Vogan diagrams for ``almost compact'' real forms of indecomposable nontwisted affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras.
