The author develops formulas for the number of partitions of the natural number \(n\) as a sum of 2, 3, or 4 squares of nonnegative integers, in non-increasing order. These formulas, which avoid undesirable duplication, contain polynomials involving \(\varphi(q^j)\) for \(1\leq j\leq 4\), where \(\varphi(q)= \sum^\infty_{-\infty} q^{n^2}\).
