The authors present a necessary and sufficient condition for a matrix to have the pseudomatroid property. Pseudosymmetric matrices possessing the pseudomatroid property are introduced as a generalization of quasisymmetric matrices considered by \textit{A. Bouchet} and \textit{A. Duchamp} [Linear Algebra Appl. 146, 67-78 (1991; Zbl 0738.05027)]. Principal unimodularity and perfect balancedness of these matrices are investigated and the case of nonbinary pseudomatroids is studied at the end of the paper.
