The authors obtain an expression for the energy dissipation due to an evolving nonmaterial interface across which mass density, velocity, stress, heat flux and temperature may be discontinuous. When the surface in question is a phase interface, the authors propose additional relations that determine the interfacial friction, heating and energy release. As an application, the authors study a problem involving the solidification of a pure substance, with flow-related effects neglected.
