By exploiting some ideas of \textit{A. Connes} the author uses the even pairing between \(K\)-homology and cyclic homology related to a foliation to obtain a complex number that is invariant for the foliation and characterizes it. He studies in detail the particular case of \(\sigma\) models and speculates on the relevance of the invariant to quantum physics. Only time will tell whether these speculations have any substance or not.
