This paper discusses a mapping problem -- the restoration of a surface from known individual points using available additional data. The author describes three main approaches to automatic mapping of surfaces: the locally smoothing approach, the analytical approach, and the geostatistical approach. Their properties and applications are discussed. By analogy with automatic prediction and extraction of information, the author proposes the technology sequence, which is partially implemented in the mapping program of the ''GeoPoisk'' package.
