In this paper the stall onset behaviour of the GA(W)-1 airfoil is numerically investigated. The compressible form of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations is solved with an upwind-biased numerical scheme. An algebraic and a one-equation turbulence model are compared in their ability of predicting stall onset and highly separated flow. The results show significant differences at higher angles of attack and the ability of the one-equation model to predict the maximum lift coefficient. The magnitude and the frequency of the normal force fluctuations are also calculated and compared with the buffeting prediction as described by Mabey (1992).
