The authors consider the interaction of a plane jet with a cooled surface by applying both Boltzmann and Navier-Stokes equations. Based on a comparative analysis of numerical solutions, a reasonable principle for constructing hybrid numerical schemes is proposed for flows with widely varying Knudsen numbers. Such a hybrid approximation would be instrumental in dealing with a number of very important problems that currently cannot be solved by applying only the Boltzmann equation because of certain numerical difficulties.
