The authors present the results of direct numerical simulation of separated viscous incompressble flow past a sphere. The computations were based on the method of splitting with respect to physical factors. An explicit hybrid finite difference scheme employed is characterized by second-order spatial accuracy, minimal numerical viscosity, monotonicity, and good performance in a wide range of Reynolds numbers. The computed results are visualized and examined by plotting instantaneous maps of streamlines, isobars, and tangential-stress isopleths on the lee side of the sphere.
