The global existence of BV solutions to a \(p\)-system involving relaxation is studied with the aid of Glimm's scheme. Uniform bounds are proven on the total strength of the waves as well as on the total variation of the solutions as functions of the relaxation parameter. If the relaxation parameter tends to zero the solutions converge towards weak solutions of the equilibrium equation.
