The authors study a second-order ordinary differential equation which is linear in derivatives and corresponds to the normal form of a degenerate Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation. A rich dynamic behaviour of periodic orbits and homoclinic connections is found, and several hysteresis phenomena are described for equilibria and periodic orbits.
