This paper describes a method for calculating the Schur indices of irreducible characters of finite groups satisfying certain hypotheses (Theorem 2.4). Those hypotheses are satisfied for all irreducible characters of the special linear groups and so theorem 2.4 can be applied to calculate the Schur index of irreducible characters of the special linear groups.
