This is a translation of a note as it was originally submitted to this journal. The late author annotates contents and circumstances of the publication (Hungaria 1956) of his article `Eine Bemerkung zur Jordanschen Normalform von Matrizen'', Acta Sci. Math. 17, 190-194 (1956; Zbl 0071.24801), a partial English translation of which is given in this Pták memorial volume (pp. 5-7). An obituary is given on pp. 21-22, a list of publications on pp. 23-24.
