This paper studies a simplified iteratively regularized Gauss-Newton method in a Banach space setting, and gives order-optimal error estimates for both a priori and Morozov type stopping rules. The analysis uses a general source condition, and covers both severely and mildly ill-posed problems. The paper contains one numerical example, i.e., recovering the potential term from distributed observations.
