This paper concerns the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions of a nonlinear evolution equation for surface waves in shallow water over uneven bottom. A sufficient condition for the existence of weak solutions of the equation in lower order Sobolev space $H^s(\mathbb{R})$ ($1 < s \le \frac{3}{2}$) is presented.
